Sermon Notes to the Homeless in Hope Chapel- October 4
Stolen Waters are Sweet
Proverbs 9:17- 10:3 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell. Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death. The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.
I. Stolen Waters are sweet: Sometimes what is not ours looks like something we should have. This verse indicates that what is stolen is often sweet to the person who has obtained the possession. Or in other words it is nice to have something that belonged to someone else that you didn’t pay for. It is really nice if you didn’t pay for it. And what is done is secret is pleasant- again the indication is a false satisfaction in the heart of something that is perceived as gotten away with . We like that and the feeling it produces. For some of us it is an addicting feeling, a false feeling of accomplishment to gain in secret and to possess another’s possession. It sweet and pleasant. However look at the forecast of the Bible.
II. He knoweth not that the dead are there. Or the person who is committing this offense doesn’t realize that he is already in the path of the dead. And that her guest are in the depths of hell. This is a stout warning to those that would attempt or believe that life is gotten or obtained through wickedness or deception. It is also an indication that a person is already dead in their sins…as scriptures state.. You who were dead in your sins hath he made alive…through the regeneration of Christ to our hearts. The Bible says the heart is desperately wicked and who can know it? It is apparent that the person committing crimes is unaware that they are dead spiritually or in the path of hell or why would they continue to abuse this? Hell is not a pleasant place. It was prepared for Heavens worst and man. Her guest Are in the depths of hell. This should be enough to tell us that we are to change and not seek through deceit.\ It states that treasures of wickedness profit nothing. Just this past week a man in the community was corrupt and was arrested and now has lost all his kingdom through the pursuit of drug trafficking. It profits nothing to think life is productive by the pursuit of falsely obtained treasures. So what are we to do….Look at the promise of the Almighty.
III. He will not allow the soul of the righteous to Famish…have you ever seen anyone in obedience to God and his word that the Lord did not help? God is the protector of those who serve him. Jesus said to seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. It was Jesus who fed the 5000 and the multitudes. It was Jesus who had the power to break the bread and watch it to multiply. God is saying that in the time of famine or need he will not allow you to fail or fall. He is watching over you and will keep your feet from failing and your hearts from stumbling. It is the Lord himself who overlooks the care of the Righteous. King David said: I have never seen the Righteous forsaken or Gods seed begging for bread. I know there are some of us in this room who have literally begged or panhandled and it may have been the difference between life and death. But in all God is victorious and will keep you in the hours of darkness that come upon you and the world. Have you ever seen the righteous forsaken? There may have been times we felt that way or may have come to the point as the widow in the Bible. Who served he last meal to the prophet…or the widow who gave the mite…but God will establish the feet of those who obey him and follow him….I have never seen the righteous forsaken or Gods seed begging for Bread.
Listen to the blessing:
Deuteronomy 28
Blessings for Obedience
1 If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2 All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God:
3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.
4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.
5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.
6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.
7 The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.
8 The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.
May the Lord teach us today that we can fully trust in him and not pursue the path of wickedness, that his ways are above our ways and that we can fully trust in him. May God help us today and bless us to do his will and receive his goodness in our hearts and lives today.
Amen
